Maugham's South Sea Stories Now Available in a Handy Ebook

The Trembling of a Leaf, Somerset Maugham's collection of short stories about the South Seas, is now available from Dixon-Price Publishing in a handy ebook version for Adobe Acrobat Reader.

The six short stories and two "sketches" include the famous story "Rain" which was subsequently adapted for both theater and film as Sadie Thompson.

In many ways the success of "Rain" has devalued the other stories in the collection which are quite provoking as well. "Macintosh" is a taut study in the psychological dynamic of two officials as seen through the eyes of the junior. "The Pool" is a story of romance gone sour—not from love, but from cultural expectations. Disappointed love is also a theme in "Red" and "Honolulu," each in their own distinct way. These stories, in fact, hearken somewhat to the work of Pacific writer Louis Becke whom Maugham had met and certainly had read.
